iOS 27 Beta 3 Unlocks Siri Speech Tuning — But ChatGPT Still Has the Edge

Apple has activated two new voice customization controls for Siri in the third developer beta of iOS 27, rolling out today to registered testers. Labeled 'Pace' and 'Expressivity,' the sliders were previously visible but marked as 'Coming soon' in the first two beta releases — now, for the first time, users can actually interact with them. As adjustments are made, Siri auditions the changes by reciting familiar phrases like 'You have one new message,' giving testers an immediate sense of how each setting affects the assistant's delivery.

The controls form part of Apple's wider effort to rebuild Siri on a generative AI foundation, a project that has been years in the making and publicly accelerated since WWDC 25. The company introduced the concept of these personalized voice settings at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June of last year, framing them as a way to let users move beyond simply selecting a voice gender. With iOS 27 beta 3, that vision is finally becoming tangible, even if it remains limited to developers for now.

Beyond pace and expressivity, the updated Siri also supports a broader selection of voices with varying accents, giving users more meaningful differentiation than previous iterations offered. The revamped assistant is accessible through multiple entry points in iOS 27: speaking naturally, typing via a swipe down from the Dynamic Island, pressing the side button, or launching the brand-new standalone Siri app that ships with the OS update. This level of integration signals Apple's intent to make Siri a persistent, ambient layer throughout the iPhone experience rather than a feature users consciously summon.

However, Apple still trails competitors in the depth of voice personality customization it offers. ChatGPT's voice mode, updated in December 2025, allows users to adjust warmth, enthusiasm, and overall communication style — choosing from tones ranging from friendly and quirky to professional and candid. Those settings shape not just how the AI sounds, but how it structures and presents information, making the customization genuinely functional rather than cosmetic.

The beta update also includes smaller refinements, such as a refreshed Reminders app icon, though the rollout hasn't been entirely smooth. Some testers on X have reported temporarily losing access to the new Siri after installing beta 3, with devices appearing to restart their data indexing process — a step typically associated with first-time AI feature initialization. Apple has not publicly commented on those reports, and it's unclear whether a fix is forthcoming before the next beta drops.
